Backlight unit (BLU) maker Radiant Opto-Electronics, viewing that OLED panels are seeing increasing use in smartphones, will use its technology to compete for orders from smartphone vendors other than Apple and enhance management to minimize any negative impact, company chairman PJ Wang said at an April 27 investors conference.

While Samsung Display has led in OLED technology and begun volume production of smartphone-use OLED panels, widespread adoption of OLED panels by smartphone vendors hinges on when LG Display, Japan Display and Sharp will start production of such panels, Wang explained. Based on the three makers' OLED roadmaps, they are likely to start production in the first half of 2018 at the earliest, Wang indicated. Even so, the three makers are expected to face challenges of reaching desirable yield rates, Wang said.

As Samsung Display is already able to supply OLED panels, Apple is likely to initially adopt OLED panels for iPhone in 2017, but whether general adoption by other smartphone vendors will begin in 2018 or 2019 will depend on progress in OLED development by LG Display, Japan Display and Sharp, Wang indicated.

Radiant hopes that such general adoption will begin as late as possible so that it can continue BLU production for smartphone-use LCD panels in 2017 and 2018 and even 2019, Wang noted.
